Reliable Red Diesel supply for farms and rail operations.
What Is Red Diesel (Gas Oil) & Who Can Use It?
Red diesel, also known as gas oil, is a fuel used in specific off-road applications. It’s chemically identical to white diesel but is dyed red to indicate its rebated tax rate, making it more cost-effective for approved users.
Due to changes in UK legislation in April 2022, red diesel use is now strictly limited to certain sectors. At Birmingham Fuel Oils, we supply red diesel only for legal and permitted uses.
Who Can Use Red Diesel?
Agriculture, Horticulture & Forestry
- Tractors, combine harvesters, crop sprayers, forage harvesters and other farm machinery
- Diesel-powered irrigation pumps and grain dryers
- Generators and heating systems for agricultural use
- Forestry vehicles and machinery used for timber harvesting and land management
- Horticultural machinery used in gardens, market gardens and allotments
Rail
- Locomotives and on-track maintenance vehicles operated on a railway
- Rail infrastructure operations exempt under current government rules
Other Permitted Uses
- Mowing machines used on qualifying agricultural or horticultural land
- Golf courses and community amateur sports clubs
- Boats and ships (excluding private pleasure craft used for propulsion)
- Generators and heating systems for non-commercial premises
Who Cannot Use Red Diesel & What Are The Penalties For Misuse?
Since April 2022, the following are no longer permitted to use red diesel:
- Construction industry vehicles and machinery
- Event and festival operators
- Commercial heating in non-agricultural settings
- Hauliers transporting goods on behalf of others
- Vehicles used on public roads
- Stables, livery yards and animals kept for sport or recreation
Penalties for Misuse
Using red diesel illegally is taken seriously by HMRC. Penalties include immediate vehicle seizure, back-payment of duty owed for up to four years, and in serious cases, unlimited fines or up to seven years imprisonment. It is your responsibility to ensure you are legally entitled to use red diesel before purchasing.
