What Is White Diesel (DERV) & Who Can Use It?
White diesel, commonly referred to as DERV (Diesel Engine Road Vehicle), is the standard fully duty-paid diesel fuel used across the UK. Unlike red diesel, it carries no restrictions on who can use it or what it can be used for, making it the fuel of choice for the vast majority of diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.
As a fully taxed fuel, white diesel meets all UK road legal requirements and complies with Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) standards, making it compatible with all modern diesel engines and suitable for use in vehicles operating on public roads.
Who can use White Diesel?

What’s The Difference Between Red & White Diesel?
Tax & Cost
White diesel is subject to the full rate of UK fuel duty, making it more expensive per litre than red diesel. Red diesel benefits from a rebated (reduced) duty rate, which is why it’s significantly cheaper, but that lower cost comes with strict legal conditions on who can use it and what for.
How To Tell Them Apart
Red diesel is dyed red by law, making it easy to identify. HMRC officers routinely test fuel in vehicles, and if red diesel is found in a vehicle not entitled to use it, the consequences are severe. Including immediate vehicle seizure, back payment of duty owed for up to four years, and in serious cases criminal prosecution.
Legal Use
White diesel has no restrictions. Any vehicle, any driver, any purpose, on or off road. Red diesel is strictly limited to specific sectors such as agriculture, forestry, horticulture and rail. Since April 2022, many industries that previously relied on red diesel, including construction and events, had their entitlement removed entirely.
