Introduction
Fuel is something you can’t avoid… but you can spend less on it.
Prices keep creeping up, and while we can’t stop that, we can help you make every drop work harder. Here are 5 simple changes to save fuel without slowing you down:
1. Maintenance
Did you know well-maintained engines can use up to 50% less fuel than poorly maintained ones? Simple things like changing filters, keeping tyres at the right pressure and topping up oil can improve fuel efficiency and save you money in the long run.
2. Fuel Type
Using the wrong fuel can noticeably reduce efficiency and may require expensive repairs or even engine replacement RAC. Always check your manufacturer’s guide or ask your supplier for the right fuel. The right choice keeps things running smoothly, gets the most from each tank and saves you money on repairs.
3. Avoid Idle Running
To cut fuel use, avoid leaving the engine running when idle. On estimate, an HGV can burn up to 21.7g of fuel and emit over 68g of CO2 in just one minute, costing around 3p. it’s a common cause of wasted fuel and can increase maintenance costs, but an easy fix: switching off your ignition when idle.
4. Fuel Storage
Poor Storage can lead to contamination, which can reduce fuel efficiency and damage engines. In fact, water in stored fuel can encourage bacterial growth that clogs filters and fuel lines. Keep tanks clean, sealed and away from direct sunlight to protect your fuel quality.
5. Bulk Purchases
Fuel prices can change daily, so buying in bulk when prices dip can save a significant amount over time. Some businesses report savings of up to 2-4% simply by timing bulk purchases well versus retail prices. Just be sure you have safe, compliant storage in place before ordering any bulk quantities of fuel.
