Fuel & Oil FAQ’s
AdBlue
What is AdBlue and what is it used for?
AdBlue is a non-toxic solution used in diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions by converting nitrogen oxide into water and nitrogen.
Do Diesel vehicles require AdBlue?
Not all diesel vehicles require AdBlue, only diesel vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytuc Reduction (SCR) technology require AdBlue. You can check your vehicle manual to confirm.
Does AdBlue go out of date?
Yes, AdBlue typically has a shelf life of 12 to 18 months. You can check the manufacturer’s label for exact expiration details.
Is AdBlue harmful to the environment?
No, AdBlue is non-toxic and biodegradable. It’s used specifically to reduce vehicle emissions and meet environmental standards.
What happens if my vehicle runs out of AdBlue?
Your vehicle may enter limp mode or refuse to start until AdBlue is refilled. Always top up before it runs too low.
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil)
What is HVO fuel?
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable, synthetic diesel alternative made from waste fats and vegetable oils. It’s a cleaner-burning fuel that reduces carbon emissions.
Is HVO fuel the same as Biodiesel?
No. While both are renewable, HVO is processed differently and has a higher quality, longer shelf life, and better cold-weather performance than traditional biodiesel.
Can I use HVO in my existing diesel engine?
In most cases, yes. HVO is a drop-in replacement for diesel and can be used in many modern engines without modifications. Always check with your engine manufacturer first.
What is the environmental benefits of HVO?
HVO reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. It also cuts particulate matter, NOx, and other pollutants.
Is HVO more expensive than diesel?
HVO is more typically expensive per litre than standard diesel, but the environmental benefits and potential for tax incentives may offset the cost.
IHO (Industrial Heating Oil)
What is Industrial Heating Oil (IHO)?
Industrial Heating Oil is a low-cost alternative to gas oil (red diesel) used for commercial boilers, dryers and heaters. It’s designed specifically for industrial heating applications.
Can I use IHO instead of Red Diesel?
Yes, IHO is a direct alternative to red diesel for heating use. It’s not suitable for engines or vehicles but is ideal for heating systems.
What are the benefits of switching to IHO?
IHO is typically more cost-effective than red diesel. It reduces environmental impact and is specifically refined for efficient combustion in heating systems.
Is IHO suitable for all types of boilers?
IHO is compatible with most commercial and industrial oil-fired boilers. However, it’s always best to consult your equipment manufacturer before switching.
Is there a difference between IHO and Kerosene?
Yes, kerosene is mainly used in domestic heating, while IHO is intended for industrial or commercial heating systems. IHO has different properties tailored for large-scale use.
Kerosene
What is kerosene used for?
It’s commonly used for heating, lighting, and as a fuel for jet engines and some industrial machinery.
Is kerosene the same as heating oil?
No. While both are used for heating, kerosene is lighter and cleaner-burning.
Can I use kerosene in my diesel engine?
Not recommended—kerosene lacks the necessary lubricants for diesel engines and can cause damage.
Is kerosene safe to store at home?
Yes, if stored in an appropriate, sealed container in a cool, ventilated area away from flame sources.
How long can kerosene be stored?
Up to 5 years with proper storage and stabilizers.
Lubricants/Greases
What are lubricants used for?
To reduce friction, wear, and overheating in machinery and engines.
What Lubricants/Greases do you supply?
At BFO we can supply Engine Oil, Hydraulic Oil, Gear Oil, TFR, Screenwash and Anti-Freeze.
What's the difference between synthetic and mineral oil?
Synthetic oils are chemically engineered for better performance, while mineral oils are refined from crude oil.
How often should I change lubricants in my vehicle?
It depends on the type of lubricant and vehicle use—check manufacturer recommendations.
Can you mix different types of lubricants?
Mixing is not recommended, as it can reduce performance or cause chemical incompatibilities.
Paraffin
What is Paraffin?
Paraffin is a group of hydrocarbons that can exist as a solid (wax), Liquid (fuel), or gas, depending on it’s molecular size.
What are the main types of Paraffin?
Paraffin exists in three main forms: Paraffin Wax (Solid), Liquid Paraffin (Fuel), and Gaseous Paraffin.
Is Paraffin the same as Kerosene?
Kerosene is a type of liquid paraffin, but not all liquid paraffin is kerosene.
What is Paraffin wax used for?
Paraffin wax is commonly used in candles, cosmetics, packaging, and therapeutic treatments like heat therapy.
What is Liquid Paraffin used for?
Liquid Paraffin can refer to kerosene (used for fuel) or medicinal/mineral oil (used in skincare and as a laxative).
Petrol
What is petrol used for?
Petrol is used for cars, motorbikes, lawnmowers and other small engine equipment.
How does unleaded petrol differ from premium?
Unleaded has a lower octane rating, while premium supports high-performance engines better.
Can petrol go bad over time?
Yes, after 3–6 months, it starts to degrade unless you add a stabiliser.
Is petrol the same as gasoline?
Yes, Petrol is the UK term; gasoline is the American version.
Can I store petrol at home safely?
Yes, but only in approved containers and away from ignition sources.
Red Diesel
What is Red Diesel used for?
Red diesel powers off-road vehicles, construction machinery and agricultural equipment.
Why is it dyed red?
The red dye marks it for non-road use and helps detect illegal usage.
Can I use red diesel in my car?
Due to the law, using red diesel on public roads is illegal and heavily penalised.
How does red diesel differ from white diesel?
Both are chemically similar, but red diesel is taxed lower and restricted to off-road uses.
Who can legally use red diesel?
Farmers, construction firms and certain industries can use it for non-road equipment.
White Diesel
What is White Diesel used for?
White diesel fuels road vehicles like vans, lorries and diesel-powered cars.
Is white diesel the same as DERV?
Yes, DERV stands for Diesel Engine Road Vehicle and refers to white diesel.
Can I use white diesel in generators?
Yes, although red diesel is usually preferred for off-road generators.
Why is white diesel more expensive than red diesel?
Higher taxes apply to white diesel because it’s used on public roads but red diesel is only allowed for off-road agricultural use.
How long can white diesel be stored?
It lasts up to 12 months. After that, it may degrade or separate.
